Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl at the start of this year. This week’s prompt was ‘Best Books I’ve Read In 2018 (So Far)’ – this was nice and easy for me since I’ve had some really great reads this year so without further ado …
10. Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody
Though not without its flaws this was a book I enjoyed, mainly due to the originality (to me) of the concept and Levi’s character even if he does use sex as a crutch to abstain from his obvious gambling addiction. I’m looking forward to the sequel. My review here.
9. Smoke in the Sun by Renee Ahdieh
A decent sequel to A Flame in the Mist which was going to be hard really, since I loved that one. Mainly because it was a kind of Mulan retelling which is my favourite Disney film but also because Mariko was kind of a badass. It’s a shame the romance arc didn’t go the way I wanted it to in this one though. My review here.
8. The Beast’s Heart by Leife Shallcross
Also and Fairy-tale retelling, I really loved this book. It’s Beauty and the Beast told from the Beast’s perspective. It really capture’s the Beast’s inner monologue and the setting perfectly and adds that extra few layers you miss as an adult watching the Disney film. No Lumiere or Cogsworth, though. My review here.
7. From Twinkle, With Love by Sandhya Menon
The adorkable love story between a film-maker and film-lover, told through journal entries and some hilarious group text messages From Twinkle, With Love is a perfect fun, light summer read – especially since it is set during the summertime! My review here.
6. Jupiter Jet Vol. 1 by Jason Inman and Ashley Victoria Robinson
This is a very recent read but I just enjoyed reading it so much I had to give it a mention. Packed with adventure, Jupiter Jet is a great all-ages comic book any reader, young or old can enjoy. I love the vocabulary/dialect created for Olympic Heights and Jacky & Chuck’s relationship is so fun too! My review here.
5. The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley
I read this very early on in the year (pre-blog \O/) and remember putting it down after finishing and just thinking “That was a good book.” I really loved Matsumoto and shipped him and Grace and I want my own pet Katsu! Mori, I wasn’t so hot on but I still loved it. My review here.
4. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
I know this book has divided some opinions but I really loved it, it wasn’t perfect but the general references and geeky-ness just really hit something for me. I can’t wait to listen to it on audiobook (narrated by Wil Wheaton!). My review here.
3. To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo
Starting to see a trend but here we have yet another Fairy-tale retelling. This time, it’s The Little Mermaid but much darker. I liked the redemption arc and the hate-love romance was actually fairly well executed if cliche. The mythology explored her was awesome and it’s a standalone! My review here.
2. Renegades by Marissa Meyer
I adored this YA-superhero novel (or as I like to call it super-prose) in all its 500-page glory and though I had hoped for a standalone I cannot wait for the sequel. I was a little disappointed the end didn’t go how I wanted but it was still good. My review here – NOTE: awesome superhero GIFS in this one.
1. Cabin Pressure by John Finnemore
This is kind of cheating as this is actually an audio show but I listened to it as an audiobook so I decided it totally counts. This has by far been one of my favourite discoveries of this year. I love every minute and have to literally hide my face on the train to stifle my laughter. It’s awesome. everyone should read/listen to it. No review yet because I have one extra special finale to listen to before I review it as a whole.
So, what are your favourite books for this year? Do we have any of the same ones? Don’t forget to post your Top Ten Tuesday links in the comments!
Until next time!
I haven’t read any of these! I’ll have to add some to my to-reads!
