Mid Year Freak Out Book Tag little booknerds in the corner

Mid Year Freak Out Book Tag #1

I saw this tag over on Amy @ The Little Booknerds in the Corner‘s blog and thought it looked so fun I might give it a go! Here it goes!

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2018

I really loved The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley – but I’ve had a pretty great year this year as far as good reads are concerned.

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2018

Smoke in the Sun by Renee Ahdieh was a great second (and I think final?) instalment to The Flame in the Mist Series that really held up for all the characters and the plot, I loved it! See my review

3. New release you haven’t read yet but want to

I received several pre-order this year and haven’t read any of them in order to force myself to read my ARC pile (gr, self-discipline) – I want to read them all so bad they are: Jupiter Jet by Jason Inman and Ashley Victoria Robinson; Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi and The Trials of Apollo: The Burning Maze by Rick Riordan.

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year

It would have to be a tie between Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas and Archenemies by Marissa Meyer – both release days feel so far away it hurts!

5. Biggest disappointment

The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton, I mean I still enjoyed it, it just didn’t blow me away like I wanted it to and that makes me sad because it came so highly recommended.

6. Biggest surprise

WaR: Wizards and Robots by will.i.am and Brian David Johnson, hands down. I went into that book expecting sub-par writing and a stupid concept and it was actually brilliant and I have been taught the error of my misguided and shameful prejudice. A really brilliant MG read, young boys will love.

7. Favourite new author (Debut or new to you)

Marissa Meyer is new to me and I’m really wanting to read more of her books now having loved Renegades so much. Two debut authors that really blew me away too were Leife Shallcross and Alexandra Christo – see my reviews of their two books, The Beast’s Heart and To Kill A Kingdom – both of which were great, and I highly recommend.

8. Newest fictional crush

Tough, no one has really stood out for me a lot I don’t think. Adrian from Renegades seemed very much my type and was the first name I thought of and I really quite liked (and shipped) Prince Raiden in Smoke in the Sun too. As much as I really want to say Wil, from Phi Alpha Pi he’s the Mr. Darcy archetype in that P&P retelling so it’s really cheating.

9. Newest favourite character

Douglas from Cabin Pressure hands down, he is the witty and hilarious first officer of MJN Air and definitely my favourite character of the books I’ve read this year.

10. Book that made you cry

I’m not really a crier so this is a big ‘none’ from me but I got the idea I should have cried at The Gloaming by Kirsty Logan.

11. Book that made you happy

From Twinkle, With Love by Sandhya Menon was a fun, happy read.

12. Favourite book to film adaptation you saw this year

I can’t really think of any … I saw Ready Player One but that wasn’t that great. All the Marvel movies and TV Shows were great and are all adapted from comic books, so that I guess.

13. Favourite review you’ve written this year

I’d have to say my review Heavenward by Olga Gibbs as it was a book that I was really passionate about. That, and The Beast’s Heart by Leife Shallcross.

14. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

The Beast’s Heart by Leife Shallcross hand’s down – it’s so pretty.

15. What books do you need to read by the end of the year

Oh my god, where to start? I’m on 37 books out of my total 75 aim so … a lot. Too many.

I don’t know about you but 2018 feels like it’s flying by – it’s so scary, time just seems to be speeding up. I need to stop thinking about that because otherwise, it’s just a one way spiral into lamenting about how short life is – how is your year of reading going? Any books that really stand out to you so far?

Until next time!

  1. Great tag! I also did this one a while back and I couldn’t believe how hard it was to pick favorites. I hadn’t heard of WaR by will.i.am so it’s one that I am adding to my TBR. The concept sounds like something I would enjoy.
